How can I help my students decide whether to apply to graduate school?

The most important thing to remember when offering advice is that graduate school isn’t the best choice for every student. Help students think through their needs. Sometimes making money is top priority, especially for students trying to escape poverty; others might have misunderstandings about what MS and PhD programs are, and may be considering graduate school without accurate expectations. Rather than trying to convince every student to pursue graduate school, focus on helping them understand what it is and isn’t, and what might be best for their situation, given their values, needs, and goals.
